Why Engage a Professional Sleep Consultant?

Most of the time, my clients are parents who have already tried sleep training on their own first, and didn't succeed. They often have consulted Google, books and advice from friends, in their journey before me.

The biggest reason why parents may not succeed is that they are following advice which isn't actually meant for their particular baby.

Each baby is different. Some babies are heavily dependent on sleep props. Some have trouble sleeping in hot environments. Some of them might be overtired or undertired, while others might not be receiving enough (or receiving too much) daytime sleep. One infant may have learned to associate feeding with sleep, while another may be ready to drop of his naps.

And, of course, it could be any combination of the above, or on of the many other sleep challenges that babies might experience. Parents who do not have the knowledge of what would suit their baby, then may get an important thing or two wrong. Resulting in more crying by their baby.

In addition, because they may not see results overnight, parents who already overwhelmed by not knowing for sure if what they are doing is right or wrong, may give up in the face of the strong resistance from their child on their attempt to change their sleep habits.

A professional sleep consultant will be able to collaborate with you and your child to build an customised plan for your child based on your child's age, needs and temperament. They can give you the moral support you need to keep going with your plan until it pays off. They are also there to troubleshoot and tweak wherever needed to keep your baby's sleep progressing well. Things being done correctly and in line with your baby's needs, significantly reduces the amount protest your baby does. Which makes the whole process much smoother and easier for everyone involved.

Let's take the example of a personal trainer or a yoga instructor. Why pay for these services when you can follow along with some online videos?

Because their knowledge and expertise allow them to provide you sound advice suited for your body, they keep you motivated, and they will be able to answer your questions and support you in achieving your goals.

So, if you are ready to do sleep training on your own, more power to you. However, if you would like a sleep expert to guide you in this process, go for it. I often hear from my clients whose babies are sleeping 11 to 12 hours through the night, that getting their baby sleeping well, was the best investment they had ever made.
